Fernanda Milan, a trans rights activist, has finally been granted asylum after she was granted a last-minute reprieve last September when the Refugee Board decided to put her deportation on hold and re-open her case.

'We are very relieved that our struggle, together with Fernanda, ended in her being granted asylum,' said Stine Larsen from the T-Refugee Project, an organization that has campaigned for Milan, UPI reports.

'We hope Fernanda's case means it will be easier for future transgender asylum seekers.'

Last week the Danish Refugee granted asylum to a gay man from Afghanistan, 
 setting a precedent for those who flea their home countries due to risk of persecution for their sexual orientation or gender identity.
