A Canadian couple have revealed how they got divorced after both falling in love with another man and deciding to continue to the relationship as a polyamorous trio.
27-year-old Adam Grant, ex-husband Shayne Curran, 29 and new boyfriend Sebastian Tran, also 29, say they hope to shed light on the taboo subject of polyamory after sharing their story with the Daily Mail this week.
(l-r) Adam Grant, Sebastian Tran and Shayne Curran have been living together in a polyamorous relationship for three years.
The trio have been living together for more than three years after meeting in a nightclub – and Adam and Shayne decided to divorce last year after marrying in 2011 so that they would all have equal status in relation to each other.
“We started chatting to Sebastian and the conversation just came really easily. After leaving the nightclub, we went home with Sebastian and spent the whole evening with him,” Adam explains.
“It was such an amazing night. Sebastian was different to anyone we had ever met. There was something about him that Shayne and I couldn’t explain, but it was like meeting our life partner for the second time.”
Discussing how the trio decided to embark on a shared relationship, Shayne explains: “I felt awful when I began to feel jealous at the thought of Sebastian being with another guy. It felt wrong to be envious of Sebastian when I still loved Adam.
“And I didn’t want to fall in love with Sebastian and hurt my relationship with Adam. But after speaking to Adam, we both realised that we both felt the same way about him. If anything, Sebastian only enhanced our relationship.”
Sebastian – who says he hadn’t been in a serious relationship before he met the pair – adds: “At the time, I didn’t think I was ready to commit to anyone so it was a surprise when I fell for both Adam and Shayne. I didn’t think I wanted one boyfriend let alone two!
“But from the moment we met, we started spending all our time together. We were inseparable.”
The ‘throuple’ say they hope to raise children together in the future and are currently looking into drawing up a legal framework where they are all treated equally in the eyes of the law.
Adam explains: “We divorced so everything would work out legally with the three of us. The commitment Shayne and I made to each other still stands but now Seb is part of that commitment too.”
He adds: “We just want to say that love is love. It should be multiplied not divided. It shouldn’t matter if you’re in a three-way or a four-way relationship.”

Meet the three gay guys in a relationship
Gay relationships come in all shapes and sizes, but they don’t always come in threes.
Shayne Curran, Adam Grant and Sebastian Tran, all in their 20s from Halifax, Nova Scotia have revealed they are living together as a ‘throuple’ since 2012 and are looking to have a baby together.
Adam and Shayne were originally married before meeting Sebastian in a nightclub.
‘We didn’t want Sebastian to be excluded or feel like the third wheel in our relationship,’ Adam told News Dog Media. ‘So Shayne and I decided to get a divorce so that we could make a renewed commitment between the three of us instead.’
They all sleep in the same king size bed together, which they call ‘necessary’ when there’s three people in a relationship as well as two dogs that end up there as well.
All three are now hoping to get married and start a family.
Shayne said: ‘I have two sisters who have both offered to carry our children for us as surrogates and are willing to donate their eggs as well. My sisters actually argue over which one them will carry our baby first- I feel very lucky.’
‘Meanwhile Sebastian’s sister will probably donate her eggs too so we can keep it in the family.
‘We want to mix our genes enough so that our kids are as genetically close to us as possible. But, we are open to adoption too. Children are a huge part of our future plans.’
While they first struggled with jealousy, the originally married couple realised they were both in love with Sebastian. ‘If anything, Sebastian only enhanced our relationship,’ according to Shayne.
They say they’re like any other relationship, having dinner and going to the gym together, and hope to be treated like one

Another civil union of three officially registered in Brazil
Remember the worldwide media furor when three people in Brazil registered as a partnership in 2012 under the country's civil union law?
Three women in Rio de Janeiro made the local news last week for doing the same. Very little worldwide attention this time. . . so far. I find just one report in English, on Gay Star News:
Brazil women legally enter three-person civil union
Three women have legally entered into a civil union in Brazil, local media reports.
The women – a businesswoman, 32, a dentist, 32, and an administrative manager, 34 – registered their relationship in Rio de Janeiro last week.
According to the Instituto Brasileiro de Direito de Família, this is the second formalized three-person civil union and the first three-person same-sex union.
The first was registered in Sao Paulo between a man and two women, and sparked controversy in the Catholic-majority country.
The woman, who wish to remain anonymous, live together in a three-bedroom apartment but all sleep in the same bed.
‘We are a family. Our union is the fruit of love,’ the entrepreneur toldO Globo newspaper.
‘I will become pregnant, and we are preparing for this, including financially. Legalization is a way for our child and ourselves not to be abandoned. We want to enjoy the rights of all, such as maternity leave.’
Brazil legalized civil unions in 2004 and gay marriage in 2013.
