NELFA (the Network of European LGBTI Families Associations) is the European
platform of LGBTI families associations, bringing together LGBTI parents and
parents-to-be from all over Europe. NELFA currently represents 25 organisations
in 18 European countries with more than 25,500 members. NELFA is a member of
ILGA Europe, Transgender Europe and has been a member of the EU Fundamental
Rights Agency’s Fundamental Rights Platform since 2014.

The NELFA headquarters are located in the Rainbow House in Brussels. With the
incorporation of NELFA aisbl, thirteen founding members of NELFA from Austria,
Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal,
Spain and Switzerland took a major step towards further consolidating NELFA’s
work on behalf of LGBTI families in Europe and beyond.

NELFA aisbl works for the protection and promotion of family rights for LGBTI
families, and it has organised, coordinated and participated in activities that
promote the rights of children of LGBTI parents since before its registration as
an international non-profit organisation.

In cooperation with Family Equality Council (USA), LGBTQ Parenting Network
(Canada), Coalition des familles homoparentales (Canada), Rainbow Families Japan
(Japan) and Rainbow Families Council (Australia), NELFA has been celebrating the
annual International Family Equality Day every year since 2011 on the first
Sunday in May. Community events are held in several parts of North America,
Europe and beyond, creating opportunities to establish ongoing international
cooperation in areas such as research, visibility and advocacy, and fostering
the development of resources and programmes for LGBTI families worldwide.
In 2015, the IFED was celebrated in 32 countries and 67 cities worldwide.

The IFED Annual Report 2015 is available at

NELFA is also active in the organisation of the Annual European Meeting of
Rainbow Families, previously held in France (2010), Spain (2012), Germany (2014)
and Portugal (2015) (see http://nelfa.org/european-meeting/ for more

NELFA has organised several workshops surrounding ILGA Europe conferences, and
with its wide-ranging activities – press releases, social media, public events,
individual visibility in various media – it contributes to raising awareness
about the situation of LGBTI families amongst the public at large. It promotes
initiatives and projects aimed at supporting LGBTI families as well as
capacity-building amongst prospective member associations by helping families
start LGBTI family groups and associations in various European countries and
enhancing communication between European groups.

Through its activities, advocacy work, communications with members and
capacity-building of local NGOs, NELFA contributes to the UN Human Rights
Council objective of promoting and ensuring respect for the human rights and
dignity of every individual and of combating discrimination and violence against
lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex persons worldwide. NELFA’s
network of members could thus act as a useful resource for gathering information
and expertise on local and national situations as well as for coordinating
support to the UN Human Rights Council initiatives on relevant issues.

Furthermore, NELFA can provide a platform for sharing good practices and
organising capacity-building activities for public authorities and NGOs on
issues related to the promotion of equality for all families. It can also
contribute to raising public awareness on issues related to the discrimination
of rainbow families and their children. In addition, NELFA has the ability to
quickly and effectively get feedback from LGBTI families in diverse European
Member States and beyond.
