La prima volta che ho visto Babbo Natale (The first time I saw Santa Claus)

Eravamo rimasti a me che importunavo con il mio pdf tutte le case editrici per bambini che trovavo su internet, e sono andata avanti fino a quando una meravigliosa redattrice di un editore grosso grosso mi ha risposto, mi ha DAVVERO risposto e mi ha detto: vorremmo pubblicare il suo libro, ma dovrebbe cambiare il formato e farlo un poco più lungo.

E’ stato un momento magico, quella mail la conservo ancora, anche se poi le cose hanno preso una piega diversa. Avevo visto Babbo Natale, l’avevo visto in faccia, con il suo sacco in spalla e nessuno poteva più venirmi a dire che non esisteva!

Mesi dopo, a contratto firmato e bozze corrette, la stessa meravigliosa redattrice mi ha telefonato per dirmi che no, “l’editore dice che si è sbagliato e la tematica è troppo delicata” “ma…” “sì, lo so, ma è proprio l’editore, dice che è stata una decisione avventata, noi tutte della redazione eravamo felicissime di questo progetto, finalmente certi argomenti affrontati con chiarezza, mi dispiace moltissimo, possiamo darle metà dell’anticipo ma vorremmo annullare il contratto”. Ed era davvero dispiaciuta, la redattrice…

Ma anche allora,  la delusione cocente non è bastata a cancellare l’immagine di Babbo Natale con il sacco in spalla: io ormai l’avevo visto una volta e non me lo sarei dimenticato più.

Ho digitato “aprire una casa editrice” su Google e dopo un po’ di ricerche ho trovato il sito dell’AIE, associazione italiana editori, e lì un riquadro che si chiamava: “Diventare editore: indicazioni di base”. Perché io ormai quel libro lo volevo pubblicare, se un vero editore l’aveva pensato possibile voleva dire che non era proprio una follia.

Sono tornata a casa e ho detto a Meri: che ne dici se apriamo una casa editrice per bambini? Sapevo che era un’avventura troppo bella perché potesse tirarsi indietro.

E così è nato Lo Stampatello, casa editrice per bambini. Abbiamo cercato insieme un nome, la nostra amica Maria Caprì ci ha aiutato a trovare un logo (e pazientemente ce l’ha disegnato), e siamo andate dal commercialista.

Famiglie Arcobaleno, l’associazione di genitori omosessuali di cui facciamo parte, stava producendo in quei giorni un altro piccolo albo illustrato: “Più ricche di un re” di Cinzia Barbero, illustrato dalle stesse amiche a cui avevo chiesto di illustrare il nostro.

Ne parlammo a lungo e alla fine decidemmo che la nuova casa editrice avrebbe potuto cominciare con la pubblicazione di due cartonati per bambini piccoli: “Piccola storia di una famiglia: perché hai due mamme?” e “Più ricche di un re”, e che l’associazione avrebbe garantito l’acquisto di un certo numero di libri da rivendere ai soci per aiutarci nell'impresa.

Il racconto di “Perché hai due mamme?” è molto semplice, identico a quello con cui abbiamo sempre raccontato ai nostri figli come sono nati.

Le illustrazioni sono rassicuranti, colorate, affettuose, quello che un bambino si aspetta quando si parla di famiglia e amore, e di nascita.

Nella prima versione il libro comincia così “Meri e Franci si amavano (proprio come un uomo e una donna) ”. Questa frase fra parentesi verrà tolta nella nuova edizione che uscirà tra breve, perché nasceva da un’esigenza di raccontarsi “agli altri” legata alla storia del piccolo libro per Margherita, e ci sembra superflua una volta raggiunto un pubblico più vasto.

Inoltre il libro passerà da cartonato con le pagine rigide, a illustrato rilegato in un formato più adatto ai bambini in età scolare. Un poco di esperienza in più ci ha insegnato che le pagine rigide sono considerate troppo “da piccoli” dai bambini delle elementari, a cui è rivolto il libro. E ci sarà una parte aggiuntiva che descrive la semplice quotidianità di una famiglia con due mamme, per rendere il racconto più completo cercando di rispondere anche ad altre piccole curiosità che ci sembrano contenute nella domanda “perché hai due mamme?”

“Più ricche di un re” è invece una filastrocca per lettori più piccoli che racconta di una bimba che ha due mamme con la semplicità e l’immediatezza del linguaggio dei bambini. Le illustrazioni comunicano serenità e mettono allegria, la grafica è chiara e pulita. Ci appare Emma, una bambina a cui piace correre, saltare, ridere, sognare. Le sue mamme un giorno devono rispondere alla sua domanda: “cosa dico ai miei amici?”. Cosa dico a chi fa domande, a chi pensa che una famiglia debba per forza avere una mamma e un papà? E le mamme di Emma rispondono: “Dì che hai due mamme, e che insieme noi tre, siam più felici e ricche di un re”.

We left off when I was  bothering  with my pdf all the publishing houses for children that I found in Internet, and I went on until a wonderful editor of a big, big publisher answered me , she REALLY answered me and said: we would like to publish your  book, but you should change the size and make it a little longer.

It ' was a magical moment , I still have the email, even though things have taken a different turn. I had seen Santa Claus, I really seen him, with his bag on his back and no one could ever tell me that he didn’t exist !

Months later, with signed contract and corrected proofs, the same wonderful editor called me to tell me : “no, the publisher in person says that he was wrong and the matter is too delicate " " but ..." " Yes , I know, but the publisher  says that  it was a rash decision, all of us were so happy of this project, at last a matter tackled openly, I'm very sorry, we can give you half of the advance, but  we would like to cancel the contract.” And she was really sorry, the editor ...

But even then the bitter disappointment wasn’t  enough to erase the image of Santa Claus with his bag on his back: by that time I had seen him once and I would never forget him .

I typed  “open a publishing house” on Google and after a little research I found the website of AIE, an Italian publisher’s association  and there, this box : “To be an editor: basic directions”. Because that book at this point had to be published.  If a real publisher had thought it possible it meant that it was not so foolish.

I came home and I said to Meri: how about if we open a publishing house for children ? I knew that she too firmly believes in the existence of Santa Claus .

And so  “Lo Stampatello”, a publishing house for children, was born. We found together a name, our friend Maria helped us finding a logo ( and patiently she  drawn it) and we went to the accountant .

“Famiglie arcobaleno" (Rainbow Families), the association of gays’ and lesbians’ parents to which we belong , in those days was producing another little book : “ Più ricche di un re" (richer than a king) by Cynthia Barbero, illustrated by the same friends who were asked to illustrate our  book.

We talked for a long time and finally decided that the new publishing house could begin with the publication of two hardbacks for children : “Piccola storia di una famiglia: perchè hai due mamme?" (little story of a family , why have you two moms?)  and “Più ricche di un re" (richer than king) , and that the association would guarantee the purchase of a number of books to sell to members to help in the enterprise.

The telling of “Perchè hai due mamme?" (why have you two moms?)  is very simple: it’s  the same with which we have always told our children how they were born.

The illustrations are reassuring , colorful, tender: what a child expects when you are  talking about family, love and birth .

In the first version this was the book’s beginning: “Meri and Franci were in love (just like a man and a woman)” .This phrase  will be removed in the next edition coming soon, because it was due to a need of telling us to  the others tied to the story of Margherita’s little book, and it seems unnecessary once reached a wider audience.

Moreover  the book will pass from  hardback with hard pages to a format more suitable for children of school age. A little more experience has taught us that hard pages are considered too childish by elementary school children  to whom the book is addressed . And there will be an additional part that describes the simple everyday life of a family with two moms , making  the telling more complete and trying to answer every little curiosity held in the question “why have you two moms?”

“ Più ricche di un re" (richer than a king) instead is a rhyme for younger readers which tells about a girl who has two mothers with the simplicity and the spontaneity of children’s language . Illustrations communicate serenity and joy, graphics are clear and clean . Here is Emma, a girl who likes to run, jump, laugh and dream. Her moms one day have to answer her questions : “What do I say to my friends? . What do I say  to those who think that a family must necessarily have a mom and a dad ? And Emma’s moms answer: “Say that you have two moms, and together the three of us are happier  and richer than a king!”
